Hospital Tour

Welcome to Holmes Veterinay Hospital.  HVH is the oldest animal hospital in Laurens County under continuous managment.  We opened our doors in 1986 and have been happily serving Laurens County for 20 years!

Our reception room and desk

Holmes Veterinary Hospital features five examination rooms.  Two rooms are large and have retractable exam tables to more easily accomodate very large dogs.  One room is dedicated to contagious pets and is located adjacent to our contagious ward.

Our laboratory is capable of quickly running most routine laboratory tests, including:

  • Fecal Flotations (worm tests)
  • Heartworm antigen tests (these also test for Lyme Disease and Erhlichia)
  • Feline Leukemia Tests
  • Feline Leukemia and FIV combination tests
  • Urinalysis
  • Packed Cell Volume (microhematocrit)
  • Complete Blood Counts
  • Pre-operative/Pre-anesthetic Serum Chemistry Profiles
  • Diagnostic Serum Chemistry Profiles
  • Cytology
  • Ear Smears
  • Vaginal Smears
  • Skin Scrapings (mange tests)
  • Fungal Cultures
  • Parvovirus Tests
  • Giardia Tests
  • Ethylene Glycol (anti-freeze poisoning) Tests

For more involved tests, we use Antech Laboratories and often have results back the next day.

Our well-stocked pharmacy provides your pet with a large selection of medications, medicated shampoos and a full line of heartworm preventatives and flea treatments.

For pet's with special medication needs, we are able to have medications specially-made at a compounding pharmacy, Apothecare, in Greenville.

Surgery is an important part of our practice. In addition to routine spay and neuter procedures, we perform a variety of soft tissue surgery.

Some of the procedures we commonly perform include:

  • Spay (ovariohysterectomy)
  • Neuter (castration)
  • Declaw
  • Hernia Repair
  • Suture lacerations
  • Cystotomies, to remove bladder stones
  • Tumor removals/lumpectomies
  • Mastectomies for breast tumors
  • Aural Hematoma repair
  • C-Sections
  • Removal of gastric and intestinal foreign bodies
  • Entropion eyelid surgery

We also perform amputations of badly damaged legs and tails and other various procedures.

We recommend that all pets coming in for elective surgery have a pre-anesthetic blood profile done.  These simple and affordable blood tests screen your pet for anemia, diabetes, liver disease and kidney disease--conditions that could adversely affect the outcome of your pet's surgical procedure.

For your pet's safety during anesthesia and surgery, we use state-of-the-art anesthetic combinations, including isofluorane gas.  Your pet's heart rate and oxygen saturation are monitored by pulse oximeter during his or her procedure.  This way, if your pet encounters a problem while under anesthesia, we can move quickly to correct it.

The treatment room is the hub of our hospital.  Centrally located between the pharmacy, surgery, radiology, ICU and Surgery wards, it features a wet table for dental prophys and non-sterile surgical procedures, anesthesia prep, surgery prep and our ICU cages.

In our diagnostic imaging department, we're very proud of our new x-ray machine, added in 2006.  This is a state-of-the-art veterinary x-ray machine and it has greatly added to the ease with which we take x-rays and the quality of our films.
